7 Days Ugandan Big Five Safari (Murchison & Kidepo)

Day 1: Kampala – Ziwa Rhino Sanctuary – Aruu Falls – Gulu
After an early breakfast, set off northwards along the Gulu highway. Your first stop will be at Ziwa Rhino Sanctuary in Nakasongola, the only place in Uganda where you can track rhinos in the wild.

After an exciting rhino trekking experience, continue the journey and enjoy lunch on arrival in Gulu town. In the afternoon, head out to the breathtaking Aruu Falls, located 40 km from Gulu. Here, you’ll take a nature walk through lush greenery, learn about the area’s rich history, and spot birds such as hornbills and weavers. Overnight stay in Gulu.

Day 2: Gulu – Fort Patiko – Transfer to Kidepo – Evening Game Drive
After breakfast, visit the historic Fort Patiko, built by Sir Samuel Baker during the fight against slave trade. The site still holds many relics and stories from colonial times. Later, continue the drive to Kidepo Valley National Park, stopping for lunch enroute.

 

On arrival, embark on an early evening game drive through the Narus Valley, where you may spot elephants, giraffes, leopards, ostriches, and herds of buffalo along the river. The dramatic scenery of Kidepo provides the perfect backdrop for photography. Dinner and overnight at your lodge.

 

Day 3: Game Drive & Karamojong Cultural Visit
Wake up early for a game drive across the sweeping savannahs of Kidepo. This park is renowned for its high concentration of wildlife, including lions, elephants, buffalo, cheetahs, and the ostrich, the world’s largest bird, found only here in Uganda.

After lunch at the lodge, spend the afternoon on a cultural visit with the Karamojong people. Learn about their traditions, way of life, and enjoy traditional dances and storytelling. Overnight stay in Kidepo.

Day 4: Transfer to Murchison Falls National Park – Evening Game Drive
After breakfast, check out and begin the journey to Murchison Falls National Park, Uganda’s largest park. You’ll arrive in time for a late lunch at the lodge.

 

In the evening, head out for a game drive where you may spot lions, elephants, giraffes, antelopes, and more as the sun sets over the savannah. Dinner and overnight in Murchison.

 

Day 5: Game Drive & Boat Cruise to the Bottom of the Falls
Start the day with an early morning game drive in search of more wildlife encounters. Lions on the hunt, elephants moving in herds, graceful giraffes, and elusive leopards. Return to the lodge for lunch.

 

Then set off on an afternoon boat cruise along the Nile to the base of Murchison Falls. The trip offers close encounters with hippos, Nile crocodiles, waterbucks, and a wealth of birdlife including herons and egrets. The sight of the falls thundering above is truly spectacular.

 

Day 6: Community Walk & Top of the Falls Visit
Enjoy breakfast, then take part in a community walk around the Alur tribe’s Mobuku community. Engage with locals to learn about their culture, traditions, food, and lifestyle.

 

After lunch at the lodge, head to the iconic Top of the Falls, where the Nile squeezes through a narrow gorge before plunging 45 meters below. The thunderous roar, water spray, and ever-present rainbow create one of Uganda’s most dramatic natural sights. Return to the lodge for dinner and overnight.

 

Day 7: Return to Kampala
After breakfast, check out and begin your journey back to Kampala. Stop for lunch at Kabalega Restaurant along the way before continuing to the city, where you’ll arrive in the evening. This marks the end of your safari, with unforgettable experiences and memories of Uganda’s Big Five adventure.
